Currency conversion on your smartphone

By: Neo Nashville

If you need to do some currency conversions when you are on the go, and you are nowhere near a computer with internet access, then there is an easy way to do this if you have a smart phone such as a BlackBerry, T-Mobile G1, or a Motorola Q.All you need to do is download one of the following apps, and youre good to go!

Owners of BlackBerries can get an app called Worldmate Live from the BlackBerry App World service. First of all, if you have not done so already, you will need to install BlackBerry App World, which requires the BlackBerry operating system version 4.2 or up, and a trackball, for proper operation. Once you have done this, just open up App World and search for Worldmate Live. The app itself should only take a few minutes to install.

As well as keeping you up to date with the movements of over a hundred and sixty currencies, it can also provide you with weather reports for anywhere in the world, itinerary organisers, and even a handy comparison chart for international clothing sizes.

If you have a phone that runs on the Google Android operating system, such as the T Mobile G1 or the HTC Magic can get an app known as aCurrency, which takes less than a minute to download, and gives you details of over a hundred and sixty currencies.

You can download aCurrency directly onto your phone via the Android Market, Googles own version of the iTunes App Store. You can get it by searching for the word Currency and then clicking on the aCurrency download when it appears. The most impressive feature of aCurrency is that it automatically updates itself every time it starts, as long as an internet connection is present.

If you have a smartphone, such as a Samsung Blackjack or a Motorola Q, that is powered by the Windows Mobile OS, then you are able to get your own version of Worldmate Live.

You can do this by logging on to the worldmate.com site and choosing to download this app to your phone by opening a link in an SMS message or email. From here, it should take around ten minutes to download and install.

If you are travelling somewhere that lacks internet access, be aware that the currency information in your smartphone will not necessarily be up to date, as it will be basing its calculations on the data that has most recently been downloaded. If you need anything other than an approximation, make sure that you open the app while your device is connected to the internet.
